CROCODILES
Meet the ancient guardians of Costa Rica’s rivers and wetlands.

Strong, ancient, and fascinating: crocodiles are true survivors! They’ve lived on Earth for over 200 million years, long before humans or even the dinosaurs disappeared. At Diamante, you can see these incredible reptiles basking in the sun or gliding silently through the water. They’re powerful hunters, caring parents, and living proof of nature’s perfect design.
LIVING LEGENDS
Crocodiles have been around since the age of dinosaurs! These living fossils have changed very little over millions of years, which means their design works perfectly for life in water and on land.
HABITAT
Crocodiles live in warm, tropical areas near rivers, lakes, and mangroves. In Costa Rica, they can often be seen along riverbanks and estuaries, always close to water, their favorite home.
SILENT SWIMMERS
Crocodiles glide through the water almost without a sound. Only their eyes and nostrils stay above the surface, which makes them look like a floating log until they suddenly move to catch their prey.
NATURE'S THERMOSTAT
Crocodiles cannot make their own body heat, so they depend on nature to keep their temperature just right. When the day is cool, they warm up by basking in the sun. When it gets hot, they slide into the water or rest in the shade to cool down. This natural balance helps them stay strong and active.
BUILT TO FLOAT
A crocodile’s body is perfectly designed for stealth. Air-filled bones and specialized muscles help them float almost motionless, keeping their bodies hidden below the surface while they watch for movement above.
LONG LIVES
Crocodiles can live for 70 to 100 years! Their slow metabolism, strong immune system, and ability to survive long periods without food make them some of the longest-living reptiles on Earth.
NIGHT HUNTERS
Those glowing eyes aren’t just for show! Crocodiles have excellent night vision, allowing them to spot and catch prey even in the darkest waters.
MEGA BITE
Crocodiles have one of the strongest bites in the animal kingdom. Their powerful jaws can crush bones and hold on tight; but when their mouths are closed, tiny muscles can keep them shut with just a tap!
TOOTH FACTORY
A crocodile never runs out of teeth. It can grow more than 3,000 new teeth during its lifetime, always replacing old ones so that its bite stays strong.
SUPER BREATH
Crocodiles are incredible divers. They can stay underwater for up to fifteen minutes by slowing their heartbeat and using oxygen very efficiently while waiting for prey.
HUNGRY HUNTERS
Crocodiles are skilled meat-eaters that feed on fish, birds, and small mammals. They wait patiently for the right moment, then strike with incredible speed. Once they catch their prey, they swallow it whole and use their strong tails to move swiftly through the water.
SMART SURVIVERS
Crocodiles are more intelligent than they look. They can learn routines, remember feeding spots, and even recognize familiar humans over time. Their strong memory helps them survive for decades in the wild.
NATURE'S ARMOR
A crocodile’s back is covered with thick, bony plates called osteoderms or scutes. These tough scales act like natural armor, protecting them from predators and helping them absorb heat from the sun.
Crocodiles might seem quiet, but they can make many sounds. Adults growl, hiss, and roar to defend their territory, while babies peep and squeak to call their mothers. During nesting season, you might even hear a deep rumble echoing over the water. It is the voice of an ancient creature that has ruled the rivers for ages.
POWER-WORTHY MOMENTS
Calm yet powerful, Diamante’s crocodiles glide through still waters and bask under the sun. Each photo captures their patience, power, and prehistoric beauty.

Diego, Miyagi, and George inhabited rivers of the Tempisque basin. They found a good and constant food source on the fish-farms located close to the rivers and they were fond to visiting these properties. Scared of the presence of the animals in their farms, the owners called the authorities to handle the situation and the animals were relocated to different rivers; but they went back to their former territories. Due to this conflict and by the threat of the community to kill the crocodiles, the authorities decided that was best for the crocodiles and for the community was to locate them on a safer place where they could be useful for environmental education. That’s how the crocodiles came to Diamante, place that they now can call home.
