September is a month of celebration in Costa Rica, especially for us at Diamante Eco Adventure Park, as we honor the country’s independence and rich cultural heritage! We take pride in being part of this extraordinary land. What better way to embrace this season than by celebrating the national symbols that define Costa Rica’s identity?

Costa Rica’s national symbols are more than just emblems; they represent the values, natural beauty, and history that make this country so unique and Pura Vida. Let’s dive into some of these symbols that you can experience, in one way or another, when you visit us in Guanacaste!

The Costa Rican Flag: The Heart of Our Freedom

Every year on September 15th, the streets of Costa Rica are filled with blue, white, and red as we commemorate our independence from Spain. The Costa Rican flag is a symbol of our country’s hard-earned freedom, and each color has special significance:

  • Blue represents the sky, opportunities, and perseverance.
  • White stands for peace and wisdom.
  • Red symbolizes the blood shed for liberty and the warmth of Costa Rican people.

The Yigüirro: Costa Rica’s National Bird

Known for its melodious song, the Yigüirro (Clay-colored Thrush) is a symbol of peace and hope. Its song is believed to call for the rains, which are essential for our vibrant forests. When you’re flying through our Zip Lines or walking through our Animal Sanctuary or exploring the land with our ATV or Horseback Riding tours, you might just hear the beautiful tunes of this iconic bird echoing through the forest.

The sloth, a symbol of Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity, reflects the country’s commitment to environmental protection and peaceful living. At our Animal Sanctuary, you can get up close to these gentle creatures in their habitat. Learn about their slow-paced lifestyle and how Costa Rica’s conservation efforts have helped protect them. The sloth is more than just a cute face; it’s a reminder of the nation’s dedication to preserving its wildlife.

The Guanacaste Tree: Symbol of Strength

The tree shares its name with our province and it’s one of the landmarks of Costa Rica’s biodiversity. As an adventure park based in Guanacaste, we take special pride in the Guanacaste tree, our national tree. This majestic giant represents protection and resilience. It’s a crucial part of the ecosystem, providing shade for humans and wildlife alike.

The White-Tailed Deer: Elegance in the Wild

The National Anthem: A Melody of Freedom

Our national anthem, “Noble patria, tu hermosa bandera,” is more than just a song. It’s a powerful reminder of our love for the homeland and the peace we strive to maintain. Every time we hear the anthem played, especially during this Independence Month, it reignites our pride in being Costa Ricans. And we’re thrilled to share this feeling with visitors from around the world with a Pura Vida mindset.

The Carreta (Oxcart): Symbol of Hard Work and Progress

The colorful carreta or oxcart has been a national symbol since the 19th century. Used historically to transport coffee and goods, the oxcart symbolizes the hard work and determination that built Costa Rica. At Diamante, we admire the traditional craftsmanship of these carts and we have our own Oxcart on display in our Traditional House “La Casita Tipica”. Be part of our Cultural Tour and learn more about this and more Costa Rican artifacts.

The Coffee: Soul of Our Land

Did you know coffee is considered one of Costa Rica’s most important symbols? It has shaped our economy and traditions for generations, representing both its agricultural roots and cultural pride.

As part of our cultural tour, visitors will experience a hands-on discovery in the coffee-making process and the main characteristics and national relevance. Plus, nothing beats the satisfaction of tasting freshly brewed coffee!
