A New Beginning for Tito & Volta: Two Rescued Tapirs Find a Safe Haven at Diamante

Tapir in new habitat at Diamante

At Diamante Eco Adventure Park, we are thrilled to welcome two extraordinary new residents: Tito and Volta, adult Baird’s tapirs (Tapirus bairdii), an iconic species native to Central America and currently classified as endangered. Their arrival marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to conservation, environmental education, and responsible wildlife care.

A Purpose-Driven Collaboration

Thanks to a joint effort with the Guanacaste Conservation Area (ACG) and SINAC, Tito and Volta were carefully relocated from a wildlife rescue center in Nicoya that had closed its doors and could no longer provide the care they required. Now, they’ve found a peaceful new home at Diamante, surrounded by nature and supported by a dedicated team focused on their well-being.

Why Are They in a Sanctuary?

Tito and Volta are adult tapirs that have lived under human care for many years. Due to their age, history, and special needs, they require a controlled and safe environment with expert care. At our sanctuary, they receive:

  • Ongoing veterinary support

  • Balanced nutrition

  • Environmental enrichment to support both physical and emotional well-being

Their presence helps educate thousands of visitors and raises awareness about the importance of protecting Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity. Tito and Volta have become quiet ambassadors for conservation.

The Forest Gardeners

Baird’s tapirs are often called “gardeners of the forest” for their essential role in maintaining tropical ecosystems. As they forage, they disperse seeds that help regenerate native forests.

They’re also indicator species, meaning their survival reflects the overall health of the ecosystem. By protecting them, we protect the forest—and everything that thrives within it.

A Careful Transition

Upon arrival at Diamante, Tito and Volta underwent a comprehensive medical evaluation and adaptation period, under the supervision of our veterinary team and wildlife experts Dr. Jorge Rojas and Dr. Alejandra Zúñiga.

Volta, in particular, showed signs of weakness, including anemia and low platelet counts. With dedicated care and proper nutrition, both tapirs have made a remarkable recovery and are now healthy, active, and fully adjusted to their new home.

A Transformative Experience

Tito and Volta are now part of the Diamante Animal Sanctuary tour, an experience designed to foster meaningful, respectful connections with wildlife. Meeting them is not only a privilege—it’s a reminder of the real impact responsible conservation can have.

Your visit helps support our daily work to protect and preserve Costa Rica’s natural heritage.

Conservation Through Connection

Tito and Volta’s story reminds us that every action matters. By opening spaces for environmental awareness and education, we plant the seeds for a more conscious and connected future.

Come meet them. Be inspired by their journey. Share their message.
